Marshall Morgan
Guitarist/Composer
Marshall Giles Morgan grew up with a fancy name in Cincinnati Ohio. Came to Boston in the 70's. Got a Diploma in Instrument Performance at Berklee College of Music for piano and guitar. He studied guitar with Larry Bione and William Leverett and saw Pat Metheny walk by in the hallway once. Then moved to Berkeley California for a year and did nothing, but fit in. He peaked as a bike messenger in San Franscisco. In the 80's he came back to Boston and became part of central square, literally. He studied jazz dance with Adrienne Hawkins at the dance complex. Became a gypsy dancer in King Richard's Faire. Started a lifetime affair with the Cantab Lounge and played with every musician in Boston in the house that Little Joe Cook built. And like the legions before him, divorced the person he met there. He joined the Cambridge based funk band Starphire. Then came together with cellist Paul Stouthammer and chromatic harmonist Michael Williams Wright to form classical/jazz trio 3 Part Invention. They still perform and appear on this site. In the 80's he somehow gained admittance to the New England Conservatory, probably because trumpeter Frank London was in Starphire also and vaguely acknowledged him. His mentor was pianist Ran Blake of the Third Stream world music along with Mick Goodrick for guitar, Peter Row for sitar, and Bob Sullivan for classical guitar and mandolin. While at NEC joined forces to form and spell the funk band About Tyme. They recorded with Maurie Starr of Bobbie Brown and New kids on the Block with out all the success. He then made an alliance with drummer/bassist Richie Lee to form the rhythm and blues band Cool Rays that has lasted 30 years, as long as Marshall carries the equipment. They also appear on this site In the 90's he went back to New England Conservatory again to study classical voice with Dr. Mark Pearson and classical guitar with Robert Sullivan. He has performed solo and with an acoustic jazz trio around Boston and the Cape and the islands for years and played from Boston to San Fransico for negligible financial gain. He has somehow avoided becoming a fucking genius by now.
